EST

EST

EST stands for Eastern Standard Time. It is five hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The EST time zone gets used during standard time in North America, Central America, and The Caribbean. EST is often called Eastern Time Zone.

What does EST mean?

Eastern Time Zone includes part or all twenty-three states in the eastern part of the United States, parts of eastern Canada, Panama, Colombia, mainland Ecuador, the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico, Peru, and a small piece of Brazil in South America, together with some Caribbean and Atlantic islands.

The Eastern Time Zone is five hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-5) during the winter months (referred to as Eastern Standard Time or EST) and four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-4) during the summer months (referred to as Eastern Daylight Time or EDT).

From 2am on the second Sunday in March to 2am on the first Sunday in November, Daylight Saving Time is in operation. At all other times, Standard Time is in effect.
